Dealing with the plateau

In the beginning when she was losing weight for her wedding, Gretchen lost weight quickly, but afterward when she was close to her goal, it got tough. She admits it was frustrating when she’d see the same number on the scale. Instead of giving up, Gretchen dug in: “I’d made it this far, and didn’t want to start over.”

How running became un-boring

“Since I’ve lost the weight, I’ve become a runner, which is odd for me, since I used to hate it. But I found out that there are some interesting 5Ks out there. There’s a Mud Run. There’s another race with zombies! If something’s chasing you or you’re getting dirty, exercise is a lot more fun.”

About the traveling pants

Gretchen was in the jeans store in Chicago, and slid on a size 8 pair for the first time. She was so elated she called her dad. He had a credit card, and bought her the jeans over the phone as a reward. Gretchen still regards those jeans as favorites—and wears them with a size M t-shirt these days instead of an XL like before.
