We're different. Here's why.

You can choose from among hundreds of weight-loss plans, diets, programs, pills, and gadgets—all claiming to be different, though many are remarkably similar. It's the science and support that sets Medifast apart.

Why It Works

Medicine.

Obesity contributes to or exacerbates many medical conditions, including type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure. And it's a growing problem.

William Vitale, M.D. addressed the concern with his meal-replacement plan and Medifast was born. This is not a pill or a quick fix; it's a meal replacement plan that works. And because it does, it's the brand recommended by over 20,000 doctors since 1980.

The Medifast brand has been recommended by over 20,000 doctors since 1980.
The Medifast 5 & 1 Plan® is clinically proven to help you lose weight safely and quickly.

Nutrition.

Medifast Meals are nutrient dense and fortified with 24 vitamins and minerals, so you can lose pounds and inches without losing out on nourishment. Each meal has essentially the same nutritional profile, and has been designed to have enough low-fat protein and healthy fiber to keep you full and satisfied, without the between-meal hunger that can sabotage a plan.

Science.

Our Scientific Advisory Board is composed of a distinguished panel of scientists and doctors. Their role is to review the effectiveness, safety, and nutritional benefits of Medifast's products and programs. The board also helps develop new meals and supplements and investigates alternate weight-loss approaches for those with special medical or nutritional needs, such as patients with heart disease or those who follow a vegetarian diet.

Support.

Whether you have a general question or a nutrition concern, or you just want to share the story of your journey, Medifast has many avenues of support, from Customer Care to Nutritional Support. Call, e-mail, or chat online. Join MyMedifast for free, and use our weight-loss tools, swap recipes, or learn from the experiences of others.

Today's plan. Tomorrow's plan.

We're not just a weight-loss program. Our 5 & 1 Plan carries you to goal, but our Transition phase walks you back to incorporating food groups you love back to your healthy diet. Then our Maintenance phase takes over, helping you keep the body you worked so hard to improve.

Studies.

Clinical studies prove time and again that Medifast works. Read the research here.

Study 1

Nutrition Journal. Davis, et al.

This study compared the Medifast Program to a conventional USDA food-based diet of equal calories. After 16 weeks of weight loss, the results suggested that the Medifast program is a more effective strategy for producing robust initial weight loss and for achieving improvements in a number of health-related parameters during weight maintenance.

Study 2

Diabetes Educator. Cheskin, et al.

Overweight and obese individuals diagnosed with type 2 diabetes were split into two groups: Those using Medifast Meals lost almost twice as much weight, experienced less weight regain after one year and were more likely to complete the program compared to those on the standard diet.

Study 3

Eating Weight Disorders. Haddock, et al.

To evaluate the long-term impact of Medifast Meals combined with the use of appetite suppression medications, charts from a medically-supervised weight loss clinic were reviewed. Results showed this combination of Medifast Meals and appetite suppression medications produced significant and sustained weight loss and were better than those typically reported for weight loss drugs alone.

Study 4

The Open Nutrition Journal. Davis, et al.

The ingredients of Medifast's CalorieBurn products (containing caffeine and EGCG) were evaluated for their effects on metabolism, fat oxidation, and appetite. Study results showed an increase in resting energy expenditure, a trend for increased fat oxidation and a reduction in appetite after consumption.
